Default Fuel Pumps... Good, Bad, and Ugly

I know that I have a fuel pump problem ... It's hard to start but after a long crank it will start and run., till the next time could be 5 minutes or so. After I ran it for a wait it's harder to start. There is no pressure in the gas rail, Knowing that the tank has to be dropped, etc...I'm concerned that if I buy a low-priced pump I'll have to do it again in a few months. So my question is is a Bosch a better product or a Carter, other Jeepers have cautioned me from using Delphi.
Your comments are welcome

Consider that the fuel filter might be the culprit. some xj have a filter installed after the gas tank. make sure that filter is not the issue.

I would agree with that. I've got a Delphi that is maybe 5 years old and has whined for the 4+ years I've had my Jeep. When I replace it I plan to get the whole assembly from wherever I can (probably not necessary for you) and then replace the pump with likely a Napa one. I believe the Napa ones are reasonably priced and have a lifetime warranty.

I have had no success in finding am OEM Bosch pump either by application or part number...My second option was a Delphi which did not seat correctly in the tank...Is NAPA the solution???

I think Bosch are a bit harder to find but I'd sure try....they are #1 in my book. Carter is second. No Airtex or Delphi. What are they charging now for a fuel pump from Mopar? Wonder if it is still Bosch.

Fuel filter is part of the "fuel pump assembly" for this vintage. When the tank comes down, I always install the entire fuel pump assembly. This isn't something you want to do again in 6 months if you try to get by with installing singular components.

I ended up building that back into the existing tank module. If I did it...

Not all fuel pumps are not created equal....I purchased 3 for the application of 1988 Cherokee 4.0 & Still trying to find one that will fit in the OEM setting....meaning not a rube goldberg 'make it work'... I returned the Delphi assembly to Rock Auto already, as it was manufactured incorrectly & would not seat in the tank....The CORRECT BOSCH has these numbers on it: 95808 JO - 019
12v 927 8 44-06
8933003 - 591 8D6

The # 1 pump is the correct fuel pump out of my Jeep..... Note the differences carefully...............

I replaced the fuel pump without dropping the tank. It is tight but very doable.

Your 1990 and the OPs 1998 have different tanks. 97+ have to be removed to replace the pump as far as I'm aware.

You all are right ... Gas filter is in the tank, Bosch assembly is hard to locate, so I'm settling on a Carter I just need to put my xj back on the road and drive it with confidence.. Carter Has a better reputation then Delphi.
Thank you all

I've bought the import brand from Oreilly's, they are absolute junk. They last 1 to 2 years on average. Lifetime warranty but I'm about to wear out the tanks locking ring from replacing the fuel pump so many times. I may try the Bosch, here's to hoping.

Default Fuel pumps good, bad, and ugly

So guys this is a good one as you know I have been dealing with a fuel pump issue that what's driving me crazy I finally ordered a Carter because I could not find a Bosch. I had been driving that as much as possible to reduce the gas in the tank to make it easier for me to take it off. So the day comes and my fuel pump arrives, guess what? that very same day I cranked it and it starts on the first crank I stop it and think to myself okay this is the freak incident I started again and again and again and again it starts on the first crank my next step is I open up the hood and check to see if there's any gas in the rail one of a few tests to discover that we have a bad fuel pump I pushed the pin in and freaking gas squirts out all over and across to the fender what the hell... now I crank it and it starts it's been days that it's been doing this I'm even afraid to put more gas in use it because if I have to drop the gas tank he'll be full of gas so what's going on? RodsJeep I checked to see if there was a filter as you suggested and there was no filter from the fuel pump to the gas grill. I am Overjoyed that I can drive my baby again but the back of my mind I got this freaking ball of fear that it's going to stall with me somewhere out in the desert or on the highway freeway whatever. Can I have a vote here should I keep it or exchange it to play it safe I say play it safe thanks for your comments.
