Fuel Tank:13Gal to 20Gal Swap
I would like to swap the 13 Gal OEM tank in my 88 XJ for an OEM 20 GAL tank. What I need to know is what else needs to be modified? Wiring? Fuel lines? Strap Mounts? I was thinking of using a junkyard tank and straps, but will it mount up without changing out the strap mounts? Are there other considerations:IE rear end clearance? Is there a better idea out there?

You'll need the tank, straps, and maybe a fuel pump for the larger tank. The wiring and fuel lines will be the same between the two. You may not be able to find a tank at the boneyard that does not have a hole punched in it. Most auto recyclers do that to drain the fuel out when a vehicle is prepped to go out on the line.

Thanks Busted, Do you know for sure that the pump/sending unit is different? I have been unable to find two different versions on parts websites. BTW I had planned on having to weld up the puncture hole.
Thanks Colston, Check out a website called A1 Autoparts they have the tank and straps for $150.00. Do you know if the pump assembly is different?

So I just got off the phone with my local parts guy. There is only one part# shown for the tank strap set and only one for the sending/pump unit assembly. I'm taking this to mean that the only difference is the tank itself. So the new plan is to order the tank from the web and reuse the old parts from the current tank. I will still take pics of everything as I do it, and let everyone know how it works.

Ended up getting a tank from a junk yard. The tank was exactly the same. I cut off the fill tube and the vent tube. Tank will now hold well over 25 gallons but leaks all over the place. I'm thinking of getting the welder out and modifying the original tank to fit a top mounted pump and sender. I'll let you know what end up with.

The only difference between the 13 gal and 20 gal is that the sending unit was lowered down. Same physical size tank but with the lowered unit it gets the other gas. This is to my understanding. No needed to cut filler next etc. Do a Google search
