Mostly stock 95 here on 235s. High 13s low 14s no matter what. Trail running ill get 10. My 3 previous XJs got 17 to 20 easily. Recently ive stuck to the slow lane and kept my cruise speed to 65 and ive seen a bump to 15-16 mpg.

This is since Oct 22 of 2018.

You guys are making me feel good about my 15-17 mpg in my Comanche on 32s, automatic, 4,10 axles, and about 5.5" of lift. When I first got it, I was getting 22mpg with the manual, 3.07 axles, stock tires and no lift.

I'd look at the coolant temp sensors, O2 sensor, and if the torque converter is locking up. A partially plugged cat will impact mileage too.

Ive got a stock 95 XJ 2D 4x4 on 30s a d I get from 17-20mpg round town vs. highway. Really happy with it. Did replace the plugs, and wires, cap and rotor and the coil. Run the low grade stuff and I’m pretty happy with it...

95 4wd 5-spd on 235's (4dr if you were curious) and I get 18 combined with a fair amount of idling and 20-ish without idling.

You'd think that 24 years later a new truck suspension SUV would do quite a bit better than that, but my Dad just bought a brand new 4Runner and his mileage is the same as mine. He did a little better in the Tacoma he had previously, but he "didn't like how the transmission shifted". Unsurprisingly, I've never had that problem in either of my Jeeps... you know, because they're manuals...

Yep. Same here. No magic to it. Just a stock XJ. Keep it maintained and don't drive like an idiot.

Tailgating will reduce your mileage, BTW, and almost all of you are tailgaters.

I drive 450 miles a week on average and get around 19.1-20.2 mpg. I think it really depends on your drive more than how you drive. Mine is mostly highway. Stock 01 XJ.

96 Stock 4.0 XJ Sport 2WD and the surface street round trip for work is about 20.2 miles/day, or 101 miles/week, and averaging 17 MPG. If I drive with an egg between my foot and the accelerator pedal I can manage 18. There are 14 traffic lights and 3 stop signs on the route (1-way) giving me and average speed of 30 MPH. I consider 17 MPG pretty good for the 4.0. I resurrected a 98 Classic for my son. It has similar performance. He commutes to college so I've been thinking of getting the Superchips Flashpaq for him to possibly better his mileage. Superchips doesn't seem to offer the system for XJs older than 98, though. I drive past their facility every day so I might drop by and see what they can offer on the 96.
