Default Gas gauge misreading

Bought my jeep with the gas gauge misreading, a while back, didn't have a problem with it until recently given if I drive far I will not know how much gas I have left. the misreading is some what the same each time but if it reads half tank and I go fill it up at the gas station it will only take 4 gallons and even then The gauge reads 1/8 under full.
I was wondering if anyone knows which parts will need to be replaced for me to fix this.
Thanks in Advance.

Generally it's the fuel quantity sending unit that is bad. The sending unit is part of the fuel pump module assembly inside the fuel tank.

If you Google "Google Images", then enter "2001 Jeep Cherokee fuel pump module", you can see the float and variable resistor on the side of the module.

You can do a quick check of the electrical connector under the Jeep to see if there's corrosion in the pins/pin cavities. If they are clean, odds are you will need to change the module.

Most folks go with the Bosch module or Carter module. Do not use an Airtex module.

If you do get a replacement pump module, (before installing it) plug it in to the body harness and move the float up and down slowly while someone watches the fuel gauge.

^sound advice from Ken. I went with a Carter and have a couple thousand miles on it since the swap. I also swapped it because my gauge was messed up.

I installed a Carter pump module myself - due to the original OEM pump putting out low psi.

Having trouble finding just the sending unit itself

And you will.

It's really not worth it to change just the sending unit. If you have 150K+ miles on the pump you should save up and change the module.

Not an Airtex module what ever you do!
