Default Gas gauge is stuck

I just bought my XJ today and the gas gauge is stuck at a quarter tank. I filled it all the way up today and it hasn't moved. What are some ways I can try and fix it? I'm new to Jeeps so please post even if it could be considered common knowledge...

what year? 96 and earlier have the pump where you can get to it without dropping the tank. the tank level sending unit is attached. they can get stuck if the jeep has been sitting for a while. take it out and clean it (replacing is best)

the 97+ requires dropping the tank. which you should do either way to get rid of sediments that couldve innitally caused the problem. plus you dont want that crap causing potentially bigger problems in the future.

my motto is if you already have it out of the vehicle its time to upgade to new or better than factory parts. why do the work twice right?

It's a 90. So it won't be something simple like a disconnected wire or blown fuse?
