no lift on 225/75/15s. i can get 18-20mpg highway average. 16-17 in the city. once on a road trip, i cleared 418 (GPS) miles driving through the middle of nowhere in the Dakotas without a gas station in sight. i was sweating bullets by the end of it. wound up putting 19.9 gallons in the gas tank when i finally filled it up.
I have a 3.5 in. lift,33/12.50/15's,stock gears,stock speedo gear,262K miles,& I get 15 MPG average.I do 95% city driving & get 260 miles per tank.

18.5 is the best you get according to you own #'s.
We have the same gears-3.55.You have 225's & I have 33/12.50's.We both have the stock speedo gear.
So.... If you figure how much my speedo is off, lets say a tenth,I get a additional 26 MP tank. That is 286 per tank, which is 17.875 MPG.
Pretty good for 33's on stock gears,3 in lift & 95% of city driving.

Mine is completely stock with 3.55 gears on 235's and my average is 17 mpg city and highway driving together. my plan is to get a 3" lift and 31x10.5x15 still. the gas mileage doesn't seem to change that much.

I've got a '91, 3 inch lift on 31's. It's fairly stock except for a K&N air filter and a Thrush glasspack. I run a newspaper route, driving @ 80 miles a day with a lot of stop-n-go and a bunch of hills and I average a little over 16 mpg.

Well, I can testify that making ALL the recommended changes to the engine, does not improve the gas mileage at all.
I have a Spectre CAI, bored out TB, new 703 injectors, Magnaflow exhaust and 2.5" mandrel bent pipe. None of these improved consumption. If anything it made the car more powerful and the throttle more sensitive.
I did wipe out the ECU and let it find it's own settings over 50 starts - did not help. I might do it again after adding some mods.
On the other hand, I am carrying an extra battery, front and rear bumpers, winch, 32x11.5 tires, roof rack, 10gal worth of rotopax and equipment in the rig...

Recently tripped CEL... Toasted O2 sensor. Terrible blend ratio at present
2" boost, but lots of other repairs done as I'm crossing 200k mi this week. Running 31" BFG's. Presently getting 13.8 town, 16 hwy, not accounting for speedo diff. Before CEL I was getting 16 city, 19-20 hwy. Depending on the conditions I refill every 240-280 miles, usually 17-18 gallons. Once a week or more. I drive alot.
Also, my MPG was virtually unchanged post lift/tires from before. I'm sure there's a difference, but it seems to be pretty small IMHO.

99 XJ, 5 speed, 4.56 gears
162k miles
33x10.5x15 BFG KM2 & 4" lift
I just went from 3.07 gears to 4.56 gears (w/ correct speedo gear) and saw a big jump in power and MPG. Normally driving I average now is about 13-15 mpg but I drive lots of hills and am heavy on the gas. On the flip side hwy driving is great! normal hwy speed 58-62 mph (2200rpm) my mpg average is about 21 mpg.

Hey I have 5.5 inch lift and 35x12.5 Kevlar's and I get around 6 mpg. And I need to find ways to get better mileage. I get a little over 120-140 a tank. It's a 2000 Cherokee sport 4.0. And I do have a big tire carrier on the back if that Makes a difference

I am curious do you have the proper gearing for the 35" tires? you should have 4.88 gears to accommodate the tire size. do a tune up if it has not been done(plugs, fuel filter, air filter) with a proper setup you should see 240-260/tank if not more.

Well, since this old thread has been resurrected, I'll toss in a bit of accurate info to (I hope) combat a little of the massive amount of WRONG in this thread.
Oh, and Wildboy, I suggested starting your own thread for good reasons. Instead, you dragged up an old one. Looks like you need to consider points 8 & 9. They apply in all of life.
- Normal mileage in a stock Cherokee running properly is in the 18-20 MPG range.
- Someone getting an actual 6-8 MPG, lifted or not, needs repair advice, NOT fuel economy advice. Something is wrong with his engine or drive train, and the problem needs to be solved before any fuel economy advice is useful.
- Lift will hurt your mileage.
- Taller tires will hurt your mileage.
- Taller tires throw off your odometer. If you have not re-geared correctly you don’t know your miles, let alone your miles per gallon.
- You can get by if you know the proper correction and factor that in each time you calculate your MPG.
- "Miles per tank" is the same as "I have no clue what my MPG really is, and I don't even know it. I think I do, but I really don’t, so I’m making bad decisions about my vehicle.”
- For some of you, it also means, “Oh, I didn’t know that. Thanks for the correction. Why is that?” (Which is quickly followed by a friendly explanation from someone who understands. There is no shame in being wrong.)
- For others, it also means, “I’d rather keep making bad decisions than be corrected, because I’m so immature I’d rather be wrong than be corrected. I may never grow up."
- New cars with fancy computer readouts of MPG can give you an accurate reading, but they have flow meters and other ways of doing it. Cherokees don't.
- On these vehicles, the only accurate way to know your real MPG is to take the amount you pump in at each fill-up (as recorded by the pump) divided by an accurate odometer reading. The ONLY way.
- Any method that involves "miles per tank" or anything having to do with the fuel gauge is wrong. How wrong? Somewhere between "somewhat in the ballpark sometimes" and "Nowhere close!"
- If you have an accurate MPG figure calculated as described in #11, you can use that to get an estimated miles per tank for trip planning purposes.
- That is the ONLY time “miles per tank” is useful.

My 89 2WD Comanche (bone stock & carbureted) with the A5 5 speed would get 24mpg highway, but that was back in the day when regular gas was 89 octane and wasn't cut with ethanol.
My 96 4WD Cherokee (back when it was bone stock) with the A15 5 speed and the tires @ 32psi got 21mpg on the highway burning the 87 octane/10% ethanol blend. This XJ is a 2 Door SE that's also been gutted and is down to 3750 Lb. with me the dog and a full tank of gas.
I did a 2" lift, put on a roof rack (the spare is still in the cabin.) and added 30 inch "soft 8" tires and rims, switched out the speedo gear (took 2 tries to correct the accuracy of the odometer) and it's now down to 17 highway on a good day with a tail wind.
I can just imagine where it would go if I added a light bar, put the spare on the roof and added 1000 + pounds of winches, bumpers, HiLift jacks and gas cans.
It's "cause and effect" guys, get used to it. The thing already has the aerodynamics of a cinder block, what did you think would happened when you compounded the issue?
