keep the XJ. Buy a motorcycle. Get 50+ mpg (my suzuki vstrom gets about 55mpg). Rode motorcycle everyday that weather permits (I ride if it is over 30*F for the high that day and now snow), to include the rain (not bad with proper gear). The money saved by commuting with the bike will pay for itself shortly and you will have more fun commuting to work.

I had a really cool Suzuki 250 I used for a commuter bike and got about 60-80mpg depending on how I rode it. Obviously get something bigger if you ar clocking more miles on the highway, but it is a pretty good compromise.
Or get a really cheap import 4-banger.

I concur, depending on where you live and how much stuff you need daily. In Colorado this gets to be miserable in the winter but I ride every day I can when its warm out to save money.
