I had that same problem several monts back...after looking and sniffing around ...it was the fuel pressure regulator, it was leaking from a bad o ring. Hope that helps!

here are a few possibilities:
1. Fuel pressure regulator has a leak form an o-ring
2. there's a crack in one of your fuel lines and fumes are escaping.
3. an injector o-ring is bad.
4. bad cat converter

also a possibility listed in the Haynes Repair Manual is that your evap. emission canister could be clogged. Don't remember what years have it though...some of the earlier years have the EGR system. Also I have no idea where you get a new filter for the canister and what not....If you pick up a Haynes or Chilton, there is a section with a list of symptoms and possible causes for the symptoms.....

Here's a couple pics of the fuel pressure regulator. It sits right up front..on the rail with the fuel injectors. Hope that helps.

5. One or more of your fuel injectors is leaking.

Recomendations:
A. Check to see if any of the injectors are wet after driving.
B. Keep a fully charged fire extinquisher mounted in your Jeep where you can get to it quickly.
