Thats a good idea, but then only the bottom of the gearbox, and the pitman arm would be wet.
I would fill it up, then turn on your jeep, and watch the whole P.S. unit.

so i found the leak. its coming out of the adjustment screw on top of the gear box. so whats the best thing to do crack it open and replace the seal? or buy a new gear box from autozone?

I'm not sure what kinda seal is inside the adjustment screw I would assume some sort of o ring. If so you can prob by a replacement for literally under a dollar. If the seal is some sort of removable type u can go to a junk yard and get it for a couple cents. If you need to replace the box I personally would go to a junk yard and get one, a new one is gonna cost you a fortune.
Around 140$ a AZ

I would either take it to where you had new box put in or grab one from the JY. not to mention if you want to go to a 4 bolt box now is the time when at the JY. look for SJ Cherokee/Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer's they have 4 bolt boxes. or just look for an XJ with a dry looking steering box.

well i replaced one with one from a jy and now its leaking 3 months later
I still say tho theres gotta be some sort of small o ring in there that cab be replaced, or maybe the screw it self provides the seal and yours is stripped out.
Someone else might know for sure.

ya i went on all data at school and pulled up a drawing and it looked as if there is a big o ring on the top and my instructor said that the threads on the adjustment shaft may be worn
