I just got my 98. I've changed the rear shocks, plugs, oil/filters, and transfer case fluid (mess!) is changing the rear case fluid easy or hard? After losing about a half gallon of T-Fluid on my barn floor during the transfer case fluid change, I'm kinda put off by the idea.
Any advice would help, haven't done this before.

Also, the guy who had this Cherokee before me didn't show it much love. All of the fluids so far have been horrible looking/overdue.
Is there a transmission fluid filter in the case, or a magnet? Is it worth it to drop the pan, or should I go with a flush at an oil change place? I've always heard that those just mess your stuff up.
Opinions/advice?

Can you switch from regular to synthetic? I've heard with oil it will mess your stuff up. It won't with Trans fluid?

The rear diff you have would help in giving you directions to change the fluid.

Its not overly complicated.

Loosen cover bolts, place drain pan under the diff, remove lower drain bolts first. You will want to do this so it holds the cover and allows the fluid to drain. Once drained move said pan and place a shop rag or two on the ground to catch any drips.

Clean old gasket material from cover and diff, may want to put a paper towel over the R&P to prevent and contaminates. Put a 1/4" size bead of RTV gasket/sealer on the cover and reverse install.

Fill through the plug untill fluid runs out. If you have the limited slip option you will need a "traction modifier," should be a small bottle.

Hey man- how can I tell if I have a limited slip? I'll check/compare the cases to what I have this weekend. The bolts on the case don't have to be torqued to a specific weight/lbs? Any specific color to the RTV? I don't need an actual store bought gasket for this?
Thanks for the advice- The picture helped alot!

A build sheet would tell you if it came factory equipped with the lsd option. Another way to tell is if you have a factory tow package it most likely came with a limited slip diff.

You can "hand" tighten the bolts, just check for leaks after a day or two.

I used a black RTV, no need for a gasket.

On the left is an open carrier.. on the right is the Trac-Loc LSD carrier.

You can see the obvious difference in the two.

As soon as I can afford it I'm changing the rear end grease out on my 01 2 wheel drive, I'm almost positive that it is a open rear end, what is the code so i can check to make sure. Also I'm going with Royal Purlple what grade do I need to use?

Ive been using Amsoil for years, if I run synthetic thats what I buy, and no, it does'nt hurt to switch, I have done that on my 2 stroke in both my premix and my gearbox and when I did my rebuild during the season there was no damage at all.

Hey guys, I have a question...I noticed gear oil leaking down from the plug in my rear 8.25differential ...is this normal. Seems after a long drive or offroading session i get some leaking, but not when its parked.

You can get a new plug. The one you have may just be old and worn. Atleast its not the leaking from the pinnion bearing.
