Default Gear ratio

Hi, now my xj (4.0 auto) have 31' tire.
what's the right axle ratio? 4.10? 4.56?
Stock ratio (dana 35 C and dana 30) is 3.55?
someone knows what's ratio ratio have cherokee diesel engine by renault (2068 cc) sales in Europe in '80?
I suppose, if remember fine, that have a 4.56
if yes the swap is easier...
thanks.
excuse me for my bad english

"Stock ratio (dana 35 C and dana 30) is 3.55?" With an AW4 trans yes. Std trans is 3.07.

"someone knows what's ratio ratio have cherokee diesel engine by renault (2068 cc) sales in Europe in '80?" Looks to be 4.11:

Good question..... anyone have any real world experience as to running 31's on the 3.55 (Dana 35) ? Pros, cons.... etc.

When I went from 215's(27") to 235's(29") on my auto XJ (3.55's) I had a noticeable loss in low end power. Still thinking of 30's next time. With our hilly to mountainous terrain I travel around here 31's even though I'd like them I won't do. If I traveled on fairly level terrain I'd see no issues running 31's.

I have been running 31 on 3.55 for numerous years...fine on flat long Island ny. Gets into the hills upstate...always downshifts. If your flat mostly 3.55 fine...next best bet 4.11 but its a lot of money to upgrade both axles...depends where you live...you can always drive in 3 instead of OD. A lot cheaper than new axles...try it and see how it works

We need to know exactly what year XJ he has and how it's equipped.
Here's where I'm searching. I need him to click on the link that describes his XJ.

Hoops.... the link don't work.... but thanks 😊
i think it is the same that i was looking at xj with renault 2.1L diesel engine, manual gearbox.
From the '90s the engine was 2.5 VM diesel, but this one had (again if I remember correctly the longer ratios). in some thread that I can no longer find someone was suggesting to replace my axles with those of the 2.1L for speed of work. ALso it should have the differential open, ideal for a lunch box.

I like that chart even better... with the Legend that states what is what.
It's fairly flat in the part of TX Im in... now if I was near Austin, I'd agree and wouldn't go any larger than 30s. It's pretty hilly over there....but here it's about as flat as a frying pan... with the occasional mole hill here and there. but that's about it. I relocated from the Rockies last year...so quite a change.
Maybe I'll still go with 30s... don't want it to be anymore of a dog than it already is on the 29s.

Unless the axle was re-geared, then you can look for any tags or numbers stamped in the axle. Otherwise jack up a tire and see how many times the driver shaft turns for one turn of the wheel (divide by two if only lifting one wheel).

My 98 XJ with the 2.5 VM turbo diesel came with a Dana 35 and 3.73 gears.
I have seen a couple of other 97-2001 VM diesel Jeeps here (in Africa) that
had Dana 35 real axles but I do not know the gear ratios. Mine and the others
came with 225-75-R15 tires. The VM is comparable in torque to the 4.0 gasoline
engine.

The VM was available from 1995-2001. From 1987-1994 the 2.1 Renault turbo diesel
was used and they often came with Chrysler 8.25 axles and 4.10 gears. There were
two of those in my town. They came with 215 or 225 tires (28 inch).

If you have a 2.1 diesel, 4.10 gears, and 31 inch tires, the Jeep will be slow in traffic and on hills.

my jeep is 4.0 auto, it had 215/75 15 tires, now it has 31 and I think it would work better with shorter gear ratios.
I would like to change the axles with those of the 2.1L if they have the right ratios because the work would be faster than changing ring and pinion
