Gear Shifter wont move past reverse

I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee 5.7 litre Limited.

Wife drove it today and said the shifter will only move from Park to Reverse.....will not go in to Neutral or Drive. She said there seems to be resistance when she tries to move past reverse. She also said the shifter cover ( the small rubber or plastic piece surrounding the shifter ) starts to crinkle up when she tries to go to neutral. Sounds like something is binding up underneath the shifter cover. I haven't actually seen it yet. Any ideas from anyone? Thanks

Don't know about your GC but the XJ cover is easily removed by just prying up on it with something flat. If yours is the same take a look under there.
