i will probably go with the 4.88's instead of the 4.56's. i wil upgrade my rear to a dana 44 as soon as i can locate one thats reasonable. if i go ahead and put in the 4.88's in my d35 will i be able to swap them into the d44 later?

Nope. You can sell them and put the money towards gears for the 44.

I wouldnt even waste money on that turdy-five. Youre better off just waiting on a 44 or even the money for an 8.8 swap. I just missed a deal on a complete, running and driving waggy for $300. If you can find something like that you could have 44's front and rear. Xj 44's are hard to find these days. Just my 2 cents

i would not even bother with the Dana 35 the ford 8.8's are so cheap and the have disc brakes they can be bought for 100 to 200 bucks at the junk yards. dana 35+35's=

i agree with most of the other posts. 4.88's w/ 35" tires. but 4.56 with put your speedo closet to correct but you wont be happy with the torque. 4.88's would be the way to go. and learning is a great thing, and it's even better with the internet because you can learn from other peoples mistakes instead of your own.

as said before with 35"s your better off with 4.88's, with an auto you will be better off putting a bigger tranny cooler in (the colder fluid the better), my neighbor switched from a 8.8 to a dana 35 in his but because it was already built. new 4.88 gears, detroit locker, yukon shafts, blah blah blah for $500

I am in the middle of putting a 6.5" lift on my xj and I already have a set of 35" tires that i am going to run on it. What gears do i need for everything to run good and not kill my tranny? Also, when i put in the proper gears will my speedo be correct? Sorry for the noob questions but you have to learn sometime and why not ask the people who know. Thanks guys.
