i went mudding during/after storm last night and also this morning and last night the gen light came on while on the drive home. i put it in neutral and revved it to about 4500 rpms to see if the gauge would change (it was slightly over 12 volts) and it jumped to 14 and the light went out. it was fine the rest of the ride home and most of the rough 6 hour day that ended too soon because of the same problem. i took it home and on the way i tried revving it like last night and it didnt work, so when i got home i took off alternator and had it tested at autozone and it past. so my question, does the gen light mean a problem with alternator? and could it be that it was just wet/hot?

 

its gotta be wet. that happens to me when I drive through large puddles at high speeds and im guessing that it has to do with water making the belt slip a little, not creating enough revolutions for the generator to put out the desired 14 volts. water may get inside of the alternator as well. mine always ends up going back off very shortly though. hope this helps.
