Default Got it

Thanks ya'll, finally gave in and got a putty knife, and tapped it in with a rubber malet - worked like a charm with little effort.

Can I ask you more experienced guys (ie, this isn't the first time you've seen the inside of a transmission pan), I couldn't get the dipstick housing off, so I just unbolted it and dropped it with the pan.

Because of that, I can't get all the fluid out of the pan. Am I going to cause problems be putting the pan back together without emptying all that old fluid along with whatever contaminates are in it, including whatever gasket material I might have pushed in there?

Thanks!

You for sure want it clean. Some guys cut the tube and just put hose on it with clamps. It DOES separate. One poster said his came right apart after he heated the "junction"

I hear with one of those limited space tubing cutters you can cut it before dropping the pan. (they are often really stuck). Thankfully you almost never need to drop the pan on an AW-4.

Default thanks - atf type?

Well, I got clever and used the spray nozzle from an old plastic spray bottle to spray out that last bit, and then wiped the pan clean with a rag...

Now my final question (until I run into something else) is ... autozone is telling me ATF+4 ... but I see different things on the web. Can someone tell me definitively the best fluid to put in there?

Thanks again, everyone.

Instead of "DEX/MERC", you may see something like this on the label:

  • Meets DEXTRON III H requirements and satisfies requirements of DEXRON, DEXROM-III, IIE, and IIE, and II
  • Meets Mercon requirements
As long as you see both Mercon and DEXTRON III, you're good to go. You do NOT want ATF+4

Agreed We can talk about the number of "t's" in Dexron later.... Yes just that, and in the Transfer case also. I myself have always used it in the power steering as well. What color is that leak?

Default Thanks ya'll

Ok, dex/merc II or III it is... I went to autozone to get it and they pleaded with me to use the atf+4, but now I understand why I need the dex/merc.

Thanks for everything.

Wow that's a joke they are telling you to use atf+4 i guarantee that's because the atf+4 is for chrysler transmissions and they think that your transmission was made by chrysler since it's in a jeep. I had carquest tell me i needed atf+4 too. Btw didn't the pan have a drain plug to get all the fluid out easier?

You're good to go. Check the fluid in a few miles. Vatozone is frickin clueless.

yeah, it did have a drain bolt. That got most of the fluid out, but I couldn't get the dipstick off so I had to resort to squirting the last part out of the pan bottom.

very messy work...

http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?...llow&cId=PDIO1, This is something I have used other than a putty knife. It is a little more rigid but I have used it to drop the transmission pan on my DD, since the engineers thought a drain plug was a bad idea.

All right! New solenoids fixed shifting problems! Now I can start driving in "D" instead of manually shifting into 1st.

Thanks for the encouragement and advice!
