Getting frustrated....Transfer Case issue.
I bought a similar era T-case for my '95 sport. Found a (supposedly) good running NP231 T-case to replace the bad NP242 case. Specified the correct spline count.
Got under the Cherokee on the first nice day (Have no garage space)..and the plugs for the NP231 are different...(I'm at work, so sorry for the description from memory)..on the existing 242..on one side there are 2 oval electric plugs...on the NP231, there is one plug (identical position), and instead of the other (lower down, if I recall correctly) plug, there's a 4 round plug connector on the other side of the T-case (bad description, but if you turned a stool over and had 4 legs sticking up...looks kind of like that).
So, I called it quits...didn't even pull the 242 off (never done it before and didn't want to get it off and have nothing to replace it with).
The next day, I said "I'll work on something else"...and started to pull the carpet up. The passenger side front floorboard is gone. I thought it was just a few rust holes, but it looks entirely gone. Didn't even get the carpet out entirely. I'm not giving up yet...but the setbacks are mounting. Wouldn't bother me if I had a garage to work with, or even nice weather...but between going out of town repeatedly and poor weather...there's no way to get it up and running any time soon...
Anyone know what T-case I have (it is labeled 231 I believe)...can it be from a Wrangler or other jeep? Any way to use it?
Thanks!

What year is your jeep. Sounds like the 231 is from a pre 91 and the upside down stool looking thing is for vacuum lines that control the CAD which you won't have with a 242.

actually 91 and newer have CAD also, both my 91 and 94 had them, so the plug your talking about(the one that don't look like an upside down stool) one sounds like for the speedo and the other sounds like for the CAD. don't worry about the stool looking one if you don't have a disconnect axle and some yrs of 242's and 231's used the same speedo gear and assembly just swap them out it's an easy 5 min job.

I admittedly didn't count the Spline input yet..
I told the seller I needed the 23 Spline.
I'll post pics of the 'new' T-case this weekend...I'll probably not be able to work on it much (snow on the ground...depends on how dry it is), but might pull the carpet and start the floor repair first (have to find more sheet metal than I thought...I have the one floor pan, but from looking under the parts of the carpet I pulled...looks like I'll need a good bit of loose sheet metal.
Have to see if I have my cheap welder or if my Brother still has it.
Once I get pics, I'll post them.
Thanks!

Ok, got some pics...and what T-Case is this..??????
I bought the replacement T-case as a 231J...but not sure it's correct..
Does have a 23 Spline Input.
Pic:
Label on the replacement T-Case):
Mopar Parts
Part # R3008212
Serial # JDAG00135
Build Date 1690315
Pics of the "stool" looking thing mentioned above..
Pics of the other side of the T-case showing one electric plug.
Pics of the existing T-Case (still on the vehicle) showing both electric plugs.. (different angle).
Other side of existing T-case doesn't appear to have a connection where the "stool" looking thing is.
So...is this useable?
If not, what is it (so I can sell it to someone who can use it)?

yes its usable, just plug off the "stool" and swap out the speedo to make it work, but i think the replacement is a 21 spline, it looks like the build date was in 90. count the input splines to be sure if its 23 spline then it'll work with minimal easy mod.

I actually had my daughter count the input splines...23 (she counted 3 times and got the same each...without my telling her 21 or 23.).
So, unscrew the plug/bolt in the 3rd pic, put the speedo sensor in place, and how to plug the vacuum line thing?
Thanks!

as for plugging the vaccum lines, lil rubber caps from any hardware store will work unless your like me and don't really care, mine have been unplugged with no caps for 4yrs now and there is still nothing in the t-case

OK...so..
The two plugs (one speedo and one ??)...on the existing (installed 242) t-case. Take the small bolt that holds the Speedo unit down and put it on the 231 T-case. What about the ?? (unknown) plug?
Thanks!
(And what does the ?? do)?

The unknown plug makes the 4wd light on the dash come on. On the one with the "stool" it is activated by vacuum on the firewall and on the other it's a switch in the case. Basically your light won't come on in 4wd.
