When I was a kid **** poor and pennyless (Oh wait things are still the same now as I have these Jeeps eating my money) the guys at the shop made me 2 box style mufflers (1 in your case) from an article in Hotrod mag and they came out cool and sounded great.

A cherrybomb will sound better if put as far back as you can.
The farther back the less it will resonate.
(had one at the end of my tailpipe on a 71 Chevelle 6cyl)

Google homemade or homebuilt muffler.
