Going Doorless
I know there has been a lot of writeups on taking the doors off of XJ's but I can't come to a good conclusion. I want to take my doors off before my trip to moab in a couple weeks, but I want to be able to throw them on quickly when i need to, like the start of winter and stuff. I have seen the cotter pin idea and I like it, but is it a good idea to take them off, or is it just too much of a pain? I'd like to have some open air because I have no AC and my drivers side window wont roll down any more. Maybe give me some ideas and opinions? Thanks.

i have a 95. had to take drivers door off to repair wiring at hinge pinch. had to unplug all connections after removing kick panel. after fixing wires it was a pain to get the door adjusted correctly to line up and shut. if u can do a pin like setup that would be easier. but it was pritty cool driving around with no drivers door.

i have an 88 2door. no speakers manual everything. i took a dremal and cut the bottom lobe off the hinge and lil effort they pop off like wrangler doors. some year models the passenger door hinge is jus a driver one upside down so pin gets flipped to opposite side to work. found the write up on jeepforum.com how to do it

i really have nothin against wranglers till they start to dog on us, then i am determined to out wheel the crap out of them. then when i do (and i usually do unless i run across a long arm equiped rubicon) then i just laugh in their face.

I just cut my lower lobe on the hinge and cut the pin shorter to allow it to go on and off easier. I think it's a great mod and love driving without them. It's alot easier (in my opinion) to take the door off the hinge before you start cutting. It makes more room and lets you see. Then when your done just realign your doors and be done

its an easy mod, and if done right they come off and go back on in just seconds. and if you reuse you stock door pins your doors will still open and shut like factory

if you unbolt the door, you will have to re align it. i had to unbolt both my doors because i wasnt able to lift the door off after i cut the bottom of the hinge. it takes awhile to re align the doors, but it can be done. i actually got my doors to seal better than they did before.

How did you get in there to unbolt it? They are so tight and I can't get it through the wheel well, and I cant do it with any ratchet that i've found. I dont have a dremel to cut it and my grinder doesnt fit...so..?

I had to take the torx bit and put a small wrench over the hex part. It was a 1/4 inch wrench I think. It takes a long time but it gets the job done
