Going Doorless
#16
I just cut my lower lobe on the hinge and cut the pin shorter to allow it to go on and off easier. I think it's a great mod and love driving without them. It's alot easier (in my opinion) to take the door off the hinge before you start cutting. It makes more room and lets you see. Then when your done just realign your doors and be done

There is a really good write up on here somewhere with pics. You drive the door pin out the bottom, cut the bottom lobe of the hinge and drive the pin back in from the top. this is for th older style doors.I'll try and find the link.

I used a torx bit that fit my ratchet and got the bolts off that way. BEFORE you remove the doors from the hinge use a sharpie and trace where the hinge meets the door . It makes re-aligning a lot easier. If you don't have a dremel ( like me) then it is a LOT easier to unbolt cut and re-align. If you cut the bottom lobe off and its still stuck, heat it with a torch and use a flathead and a hammer to very gently tap it down and off. Be careful not to bent the pin. The lobe on the bottom hinge on the passenger door is factory stuck to the pin like the tops of the other hinges. I knocked the lobe and pin out of the hinge as one piece and welded a small peice of rod inplace of the pin. There is another way to do it that I saw on a thread somewhere but I can't remember what it was. Once the lobe's off you can muscle the door up and off once off use a drill bit thats the same size as the pin to take out the wire mesh inside the hinge. This will make the doors a lot easier to take off. I also cut the pins at slightly different lengths so you can put them into the hinge one before the other. I used a 1/2" drill bit to drill the top of the hinge hole like a funnel making it easier to put the doors back on. Taking the doors off my xj is by far my favorite mod.

I tried cutting this hinge with a sawzall with the door still on the jeep and you can see that it wasn't pretty. When I finally decided to unbolt the door, one of the bolts didn't feel like cooperating so I had to grind it off

This is only true for the passenger bottom hinge. On the rest of the hinges, the pin will stay pressed in when you remove the lobe. I'm not sure about the rear doors because I have a 2 door...

I looked at taking off my doors for about a min and then realized it was gonna take more than a couple minutes the first time. I'm glad I found this thread, and hopefully some of the promised links will actually show!

Once you have your doors off, its going to think that your doors are open so the dome light will be on. At first I just unscrewed the switch and cut the black wire. That worked but then the light will never come on. Then I unscrewed the switch again, added about a foot of wire to each end that I cut and ran those to a toggle switch on the kickboard. Now when the doors are on I leave the switch in the on position and the light works. When I take the doors off, I turn the switch to off and that kills the dome light.

You can also pull the fuse, but depending on year other electrical goodies may be on that fuse.
