got a 8.25 for 150 at the jy today got some Q's
my cherokee is a 92 laredo 3" lift 3.55 gears
I pulled a 8.25 out of a 97 from the jy today to replace my d35.
ive never done this before and I still have some questions after my googleing so here it goes.
the new jy has 3.55s. i know i need to get new ubolts
1. I cut the ebrake cable because the jy was closeing and i was rushing
also the hard line is leaking at the little block on the axle
is that gonna be a problem?
can I swap the brakes from my d35 onto the 8.25? they are only a few months old.
2. I didnt take the drive shaft because it had a flat spot/dent in it
Ive got a 3" lift though, will my old shaft work?
anything else i should know/ be prepared for?

you will have to get a 8.25 brake kit. the pads are a different size. Just buy all new stuff for the 8.25. You will also have to use the ebrake cables from your d35 so it was ok that you cut the jy ones. You can use some silicone or red RTV on the leaking hard line or use the one off your d35 but you may have to grind it down some. I did. On my jeep I just used a front driveshaft but I have 4.5" lift and a SYE. Not sure for your 3" lift. Is yours auto or stick?

ok so the ebrake is not a problem
its an auto
the drum brakes cant be swaped over? i read that they are interchangeable but then i also read that they arn't
some posts i read said that the d35 drive shaft was a little longer but the lift would make up the differance.
i was hoping someone who has done the swap could shed some light

I've been searching and you can use the existing e-brake cables.
You can still use your original drive shaft. Problem is with the difference in length of the housing, you change the angle on the shaft slightly and you may notice some vibrations from the u-joints because of it. It doesn't happen with all Jeeps doing this swap. If you get the vibes and don't plan on an SYE, do a transfer case drop and get another drive shaft for the 8.25.
And FYI-- DO NOT use silicone to fix a brake line. The line holds pressure. If you want to keep your brakes, replace the parts correctly.

hollands jy in billerica. i asked how much for the axle out of the cherokee and they said 75
but they thought i ment just a axle shaft not the whole rear lol. but still 150's cheap enough
that kinda sucks about the brakes. oh well i guess i will just clean up 8.25 brakes and replace the drum pads.
i'll use the d35 hard brake line if its interchangable since its less than 6 months old
or just buy a new one
ive already got a 1" tcase drop. how will that effect things. do i need to drop it lower ?

As long as both the '92 and '97 rears had 9" diameter brakes, all the brake parts should interchange. Same shoes, same self adjuster parts, same hardware kits. The only thing different would be the actual backing plates because the 8.25 has a larger center bore than the d35, but you wouldn't change those in the course of any normal brake service.

Oops. Didnt mean to say to use it on the brake line. I was thinking he was saying the "little block" for the vent tube. xjheep92 just tighten the brake line a little more.
