The Great Tire Debate
So I thought I had decided on my new tires: General Grabber AT2's...but now I'm not sure.
The local tire dealer is having a deal on Goodyear Wranger AT/s's for $100/pop installed, whcih is awesome. But it's also goodyear wranger, the bottom of the three I'm looking at which are:
B/F Goodrich T/A
General Grabber AT2
Goodyear Wranger AT/S
Thoughts on all 3? I've also gotta be considerate of $, and the grabbers are right in the middle, and actually rated highest of all 3 on tirerack.com. However, the other issue is I need some ASAP before we get anymore worse weather, and the wrangler's are in stock. Possibly have the bf goodrich in stock, but the grabbers will take about a week.
Thoughts..should I wait on the grabbers? Spend the extra on bf if they have them, or settle for the cheaper of the 3, the wrangers?

The grabbers are a similar tread pattern to the BFG ATs.. and I have heard they perform about the same. My funds are pretty much non existant so I had to go with the cheapest tires I could get... Goodyear Wrangler Radials for $55 each at Wally World. They are ok for the driving I do and since I dont off road my XJ... (besides the dirt roads/mud by my house) I am not real concerned with trail performance at this time.

I'm not HUGE intro trail performance but I'd like to get out a BIT. I'm more concerned with snow/ice/rain traction than anything. I see the goodyears rate the lowest especially in ice. I knwo most tires, except studs) do pretty crappy in ice, so I just don't know. I want to keep low cost, and the thought of low cost AND getting them tomorrow sounds appealing . But I also love how the grabber ratings and performance.....

My question is what size tire are you wanting? Look at the over all diameter of the tire specs and you might be suprised. Out of the 3 I would go with the General Grabber.

I like Goodyears, I usually throw a set of those on everything when the time arises, in fact I have a set on the 98 and up until now (almost the end of service life) I've never had a problem in anything. I even had a set of some bias ply GY's that worked great til my alignment ate them up. I've also had a set of BFG's and those were pretty good. Never had the General's so I rightly don't really know how they work in whatever...

just dont get Goodyear MT/R ... i spin like a bastard at everystop sign in top cuz of all the ice...in the snow they work great but on ice they are *****

The biggest down side to any Goodyear tire is life. They never seem to last very long at all.... Sure you save a buck, but you have to spend it twice..

I second the Bridgestone Dueler AT REVO VERY VERY VERY good tire wear great and last forever great traction too, but pricey! Have you looked at the Firestone Destination AT? It is also a good tire that will perform great on and off road and since you dont need a VERY aggresive tire then this would be great. I dont like BFGs becuase all of them i have seen look like they would ride like bricks going down the road... Grabbers? ehh not so much either....

So I'm definitely now leaning towards the bridgestones or firestones after doing some more research. I'm leaning more towards the bridgestones EXCEPT for their price....
As for mudders....impractical for someone who doesn't plan to do MUCH mudding, or at least not for a while? More snow/ice/light off roading..thoughts?
