Have you checked the bearings? Jack up the front of the vehicle and see if there is any play in the tire when pulling/pushing on the top and bottom of the tire.

If I hear grinding in the front of a vehicle, that is the first thing that I check.

The good thing on an XJ is that they are unit bearings.
The bad thing on an XJ is that they are unit bearings.
