Grinding when turning
This just started today When I turn right in the jeep pitches I get a slight grinding noise that seems to be coming from the rear. Any ideas? It almost sounds as if it is coming from the differential

Is it clearly a grinding noise or dose it make like a clunk because my buddys xj made a like popping clunk that you would expect from the front end only when he turned left and here it was the transfer case

This has become inconsistent and sounds like its coming from the rear axle area, it almost sounds like the fuel pump priming but louder

I have the same problem.
When I pulled the diff-cover off, I noticed that when the two clamps are released, I can shift the axle and housing left-to-right by about 1/4 inch. I also noticed metal shavings in the diff oil. I added some shims to the left side, to tie me over for a few more days, as I'm replacing my rear-axle this Friday anyway. I should note that the pinion bearing is gone as well in my case, causing part of the problem. (Hence the replacement axle)
The shims worked for a while in reducing the sound you're describing, but as the pinion bearing has wore down further since I shimmed it, the noise is back. (I cringe every time I turn a corner!)
Anyway, perhaps something to check for?
