Tell him to stop being a cheapass redneck and get a brain. Who cares if it works just buy a real lift kit and be done with it. If you cant afford a real lift then dont lift it. Im not saying go buy an RE 5.5" long arm, but be serious. v8 zj coils go for 100 bucks, s10 leaves for 100... plus shocks and u-bolts, thats 300 bucks for a 3" lift. I swear cherokee's are the new friggan f150's. And to answer your next question, no 35's wont work with a dana35 and no 35's wont fit stock

It's really not the safest reliable way to lift a jeep.
Tell him to go ahead and do it if he wants to get laughed off the trails.

Pucks and blocks, same thing....not good, not smart. Just because it works doesn't mean it's right. Who cares if your buddy gets hurt by doing dumb stuff, what about the guy that does all the safe things he can to wheel with his family and gets plowed by the dumb guy trying to get his rig as tall as he can, as cheap as he can to impress the buddies he hangs with. Tell him not to do it then get some smarter buddies and leave him to his devices.

see this jeep? its my 89 i got for 500 bucks as it is in picture. its lifted 8"s the wrong way. front-doubled 2" pucks and 4" lift springs, rear-4" blocks welded to a d35 and 4" drop shackles with 18" travel pro comp es9000's recomended to my friend by a 4x4 shop. I priced it out to do it right way and it was about $75 cheaper than this. for anyone whos wonderin i have not bothered wheelin it yet and am currently rebuilding the whole suspension. So long story short tell your friend NO!!!
