Hard knocks

Greetings all. My 93 recently started making a loud knocking noise in 4hi. Based on what I’ve read so far, I believe it may be the chain slipping over broken teeth in the transfer case. However, there is a slow leak coming from the front of the drive shaft. How would I add fluid and what type of fluid should I use for this? I’d rather spend a few bucks on lubricant than a new transfer case.

Your transfer case takes Dexron III/Mercon, which is the same stuff your transmission uses if you've got the automatic. The fluid should be right at the bottom of the fill hole (the top one).

Very low fluid will certainly accelerate chain wear. If you're going to drain and replace, make sure you can get the fill plug out first (btdt). You can sorta gauge how loose the chain is by reaching in through the hole and seeing how much up-down play it has. Or if you have a front disconnect by just turning the front output back-n-forth. Is there much side-side play on that front output? I'm wondering if that bearing is shot.
