Wondering what happens if you run it without the outer ring, (Temporally). The thing aint' exactingly a Swiss watch for starters. I've made it 12 years without ever seeing my timing mark.

I just don't know Crazy. It might cancel some crazy harmonic that will cause that 4.0 to transmit your position to Alpha Century. Also "simply" removing the outer ring may be no cakewalk. Don't know what to say. Trim the rubber? See if the JY has one or a song? (mine is fine at 280K). (probably....

WHOOP WHOOP!

Don't wait like I did. Turned into a "thing".. Mine eventually went backwards and ate into my front cover. Yes! The 4 cylinder 2.5 has the same front timing cover. Argue with the junkyard. It's fun. You will also need to rent the balancer puller from the parts place. Make SURE you use the puller correctly or you WILL damage the "nose" of the crank and have to re-tap it and locate a fancy bolt that fits.

The project isn't that bad really. Can do it without removing the bumper or draining any fluids. Has been done in the Autozone parking lot also.

I can replace it, no sweat...except the sweat out of my wallet...which I don't have right now. The serpentine belt is jacked up too. :/ I hope to get a couple hundred more miles out of it...

Retail Me Not is actually showing a 30% coupon code right now. Sometimes those don't work though.
Advance also has 'friends coupon' that is $30 off an $80 purchase (or $35 off of $85, can't remember). You will have to search for the current code however, mine is outdated.

I work at advance and they are 44.99. I would replace it now before it ends up being more than 45 bucks.

I know that on the Chev 6.2 diesel, the crankshaft has been known to snap due to a bad balancer.

I know of one freshly built Chevy smallblock that snapped its crank at the first main because the old balancer was reused, which almost immediately failed. "It should be good for a couple of weeks" -Famous last words. It had barely 300 miles on it.
