Default Have to trigger gas nozzle

My buddy has a 01 XJ 4.0 and when he fills up with gas he can't getting nozzle to the first notch before the pump kicks out. He has dropped the tank and looked for obstructions in the filler tube and vent tube and didn't find anything. He has also tried placing the nozzle in and out further and nothing helps.

This sometimes happens... I really think it would have to do more with the pump than a problem with the vehicle.

Is there anything he can do to fix the issue. The winters can get pretty cold here and he is dreading having to go another winter triggering the nozzle to fill his tank every time.

That's what I told him but he said it doesn't matter where he fills up at.

Has he tried putting the nozzle in upside down? It works on some vehicles.

My wifes TJ does this all the time.

Our climates aren't that far off, and she's ok being outside filling up for 5 minutes.

If you read the pump it'll tell you not to walk away anyway.

He's tried putting it in upside down and pulling it out. My other guess would be it might be to flat from the bottom of the filler tube to the tank. It also says drive offs will be prosecuted and people still do it. I give you props for standing out in the cold on those -30 below days.

I do the same thing with my 01. You can squeeze the trigger all the way without gas flying everywhere.

it started happening to me and i did the same as thejerm just pull it out a bit. i believe theres a strainer/screen to keep large impurites out and when its up against it it cant flow fast enough so it triggers it to stop. of course this could mean the little screen is getting clogged. i could also be wrong... but im pretty mine has something like that. but maybe im thinking of another vehicle in our fleet.

anyways have you tried slowing the flow? only squeeze it half way? see if that works?

By any chance is the check engine light on? Could be caused by a stuck closed Evap vent control solenoid causing internal tank pressure to be to high. First indication would be the sound of air rushing out when you open the gas cap or the instant smell of fuel vapors when the cap is removed.

My thinking would be to check the vent for the tank. Your pushing gas in the tank and the air in there has got to go somewhere.

Pulling it out to the point where the nozzle is barely in there doesn't help at all. He can't even get it close to the first notch and still has to trigger it. I'll ask him if there's a screen in there. Its weird that some do that and some don't.
