Default Head light problem

Hi, I'm having a weird issue with my jeep lately; the driverside headlight doesnt light up anymore. The weird thing is, it will work if i put them on high beams.... The fuses are looking fine and the light bulbs have been changed not too long ago. Anyone had that problem? Thanks.

First thing to check would be whether you get power to the connector.

If you haven't done so already, you might be able to cheat and do the headlight harness upgrade since it only requires 1 of the original connectors to operate.

It's probably the contacts in the bulb connector. They do fatigue over time.

With the harness upgrade the difference is like night and day! Pun intended!

Make sure to check the connector for the switch for sign of excessive heat (melting and such). That switch is the weak link in the headlight circuit. Even if it's good your not getting the full voltage that's available for the headlights. That's what dave1123 is referencing to.

Not likely to affect just one headlight though. Do the upgrade harness which takes the load off the headlight switch and call it good.

All the upgrade harnesses I've seen have ceramic headlight plugs that are designed to not melt if you change to H4 headlight assemblies. You don't need to, but that capability is built in. The way this harness works is it draws power for the headlights directly from the battery thru relays instead of all power going thru the switch and multifunction switch, which have a tendency to burn out when handling that kind of amperage draw. The harness connects to the right headlight plug to trigger both headlight relays, drawing only enough power thru the stock system to trip those relays, about 3 amps. Installation is simple. 3 connections, headlight plug, power wire to the battery which has it's own fuse, and a ground wire. About the hardest part is threading the harness thru the grill to the headlights and grounding it there, and finding a bolt to secure the relays. All the original wiring is left in place if you want to.

HEADLIGHT HARNESS UPGRADE

It’s easy to install a supplemental headlight harness.

From the factory, the voltage to the headlight bulbs travels from the battery, through connectors, inside the cabin, to the headlamp switch, and then back out to the lamps via undersized wire and more connectors. It’s not uncommon to find only 10.5 volts at the lamps.

The supplemental harness is installed so that it provides battery voltage to the lamps and is just triggered by the factory wiring. The result is about 35% brighter headlamps and headlight switches that don’t melt and burn out.

Here’s a link to a harness on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/CERAMIC-H4-H...-/330997592807

Absolutely plug and play:
  • Remove grille and headlamp bulbs. I fed my harnesses from the passenger side starting between the battery and the back of the headlamp housing, over to the driver side.
  • Plug the driver side bulb into the new harness.
  • Attach the new harness’s ground wire under one of the small bolts on the radiator support after scraping the paint off under it.
  • Attach the harness to the existing harness behind the grille working toward the passenger side.
  • Plug the new harness plug into passenger headlamp.
  • Plug original headlamp plug into receptacle on new harness.
  • Attach the ground for the passenger side just like you did the driver side under a radiator support bolt.
  • Attach relays with provided bracket on the passenger side inner fender.
  • Connect power wires to battery.
  • Revised 1-31-2016

Thanks for the tips, I'll check on the forum and on youtube about the upgrade!

The only additional thing I had to do with mine was splice in a new passenger's side headlight plug because the original was really corroded. This is where the new harness connects to the old wiring.

Could I ask you some kind of list of the things I'd need for the harness upgrade? And do you think replacing the dimmer/**** on the dash would be a plus? I removed the panels but haven't really seen if it was bad.

My full-size Chevy van uses the same headlights. I had upgraded to H4 years ago. At one point I had a low beam that only worked sometimes so I bought new bulbs. When I went to change them I noticed the terminal for the low beam was corroded and the connector was slightly melted. I was able to clean them up and hadn’t had a problem since. So check the connector first for sure. Also check the connector for power. And the harness upgrade is a great idea if you have the funds.
