Headlights stay on, no buzzer....
This happened last night. It was cold as , so that may have something to do with it. But I turned off the headlights, opened the door (no headlight warning buzzer) then realized they were still on. So I fiddled with the light **** and the brights for a minute, then they went off finally. Any ideas on what happened?

On my '87 if you don't turn them off before taking the key out of the ignition they will stay on for some time. I assume they're supposed to do that but I'm not sure...

nope. definitely not supposed to do that.
headlight on/off switch is common failure point on cherokees. You likely need to replace it.

try it again, these guys are onto somethin.
first turn the ignition off and remove your keys, then turn off the headlights. they'll stay on for about 30-45 seconds.
then try it by turning off the headlights, then shut the jeep off and remove the keys. headlights will shut off right away.
i'll bet there's nothing wrong. it's a courtesy light package. every cherokee i know has it.

Some xj's have the headlight delay some don't! My donor 91 did and i use the feature on occasion. However the cold will make headlight relays-or any other relay- show signs of old age.....They stick on , or off.

The majority of cherokees have the delay feature. If you pull the key out before you turn the lights off they will stay on for awhile. So you don't get raped walking to your front door...

My '99 has the delay feature. Turn off the ignition first, then headlights they stay on (but only the headlights remain on, interior lights, tail lights etc all shut off). But, turn of headlights first, then ignition and they shut off.

You guys nailed it. I guess it's not a big deal, whether the delay is supposed to happen or not. I guess I'll just take my chances. ()
