Remove all the trim along the roof (like around the top of doors, above the rear windows, above the tailgate), the sunvisors and dome lights.

I just pulled mine right down, be careful with the wires from the lights they might be glued or taped on the headliner, also with the foam/fiberglass it only bothered me when it got in my eyes I screamed like a little girl 8( so where safety goggles. Hahaha also take all the trim off from around the headliner and dome lights and sun visors.

make 1 cut from center windshield to center rear window, hopping over the dome lights, but cutting close. then make a cut from drivers door to passender door, once again hopping over dome but close. make another cut at back for Drivers side rear seat to opposite side, and another in back hopping over the dome. the dome lights will have 4 cuts in a + fassion, and should be easily be left mounted to the cross member above headliner. rip away and be nice to your domes and its cake. the fiberglass is nasty! wear long sleeves/ mask!

There's tons of info if you google it. You'll find videos as well.

You asked for the best way...basically, remove all trim from back to front. Remove sun visors, dome light, handles on liner...pull through back hatch. Peel old liner off, scrub off all foam left behind. Get headliner material...many options online...look around. lay it out on headboard, pull half way back, spray adhesive on back of liner you pulled back and on headboard, glue in place, then do other half. Let dry, put back in through back hatch, replace moldings etc. Don't forget to cut holes where screws go....should take a few hours.

if youre just removing it and keeping it out, there is no need to mess with trim at all. if youre replacing fabric,... it gets trickier. I love it out, no change in heat/ noise, + gives tons of places to build a bungie cargo net in back along roof for straps etc.

Here in Chicago, there is a little bit off a difference. I can feel the heat only if it sits in the sun with the windows all the way up (obviously ) And there is a little bit more noise, windwise. Also rain is a bit louder too but I like the sound of rain so I actually like it more!. Other than that it is awesome! Gives you a little bit more head room too for us taller guys
