Is there a light behind there? Mine has been dark since I got it, just wanted to ask before I ripped it apart.

 

Mine doesn't light up either, and unforunately I forgot to check while I was doing my deck install. Anyone know?

yes there is its on the left side twords the top of the heater control panel its a 192 bulb I think. I never put mine back in when I replaced the heater control. I believe the light only comes on though when the heater/ AC is turned on. thats the way mine worked before the bulb went out.

 

All Xj HVAC controls are lighted.
The light illuminates with the dash lights.

They are VERY small bulbs. Not like other vehicles that use a "side marker" like bulb. The socket is very brittle and cracks easily. The small tabs that lock it into the control assembly usually break off and the socket/bulb fall out.

 

sounds like a good place for some SMT LEDS.

 

Thanks guys! Any idea how to take off the big trim plate? Is it just the screws around the outside? I took out several of them but it didnt seem to loosen up much.

 

I assume you are referring to the speedometer/dash bezel.

Should be
Three screws inside the gauge area. (Upward)
One above headlight **** (Upward)
One above lighter. (Upward)

After those are removed the bezel is held in place by pressure clips...
In other words:
Grab a tight hold of it and gently pull.
Be careful with the upper and lower corners on the right side.

Once the bezel has been detatched, lean the top towards the steering wheel and ease the gauge "shadowbox" out from under the dashpad.
