Can't find the older heater control valve, and definitely not spending $65 for it at AA, so I took the defective one back. Got my refund, and got this. I really wish I had the valve to buffer the heat, but oh well...

Good call! Do you have hose clamps too?

Not sure what you mean by "buffer the heat"? How hot it gets in the cab is controlled by the heater's blend door in the HVAC box - that's what the heat lever controls. Did you think all us '97+ owners drive around with the heat on max or something? lol

97+ has a different layout that isolates the heater core. 96-down the air flows against the heater core when blend door is on cold. Did you think the 96-down had the heater valve just to raise the production costs

ps--I also deleted the valve, my AC works, but it definitely decreases effectiveness in summer. Worth it not to deal with the valve.

Yes lol. Everyone else I've known with a <96 said they noticed no difference

They sell valves with some t-shaped connectors that allows you to open and close the valve so you can close the air flow from the heater hose in the hotter months. I actually found one around here that goes to a water hose...gonna try it first.
