Default Heater Core Problems and Rocker Cover :(

Hey Guys,
After years of wanting one, i finally purchased a 1995 XJ, I love it
and it gets me out of any problem, easy to work on! but ive got some trouble
with it,

The hose that is ment to be connected to the heater core has been re-routed back to the engine, by passing the heater core, Does this mean
a mechanic has done this due to a leak or some sorts? Does this mean a
new heater core is in order? I was quoted 900$ (AUD) to get a mechanic to
replace the heater core, i cant afford this so does anyone have a guide to doing it as ill do it myself.

Also my rocker cover gasket is leaking oil out of the last two cylinders, Is it an easy swap over? does anyone have any hints with doing this?
Thanks heaps!
William

Valve cover gaskets are relatively straight forward to replace. Just don't make the common mistake of over tightening the bolts during the job. As to the heater core the most common reason for bypass is a leaky core and yes they can be a bear to change on some vehicles although I have never done one on a xj.

I have read in my Haynes Manual the process of replacing a heater core.. It's like reading some sort of physics book lol. A little exageration but it does look complicated. I can scan the pages on the replacement and send them to you if you would like.
