OK, new fun thing! We've been getting some snowfall the past couple days so yesterday and today I experimented with the 4WD. I have the 231 transfer case with part time 4WD HI and I put it in that mode. I noticed the PART TIME indicator light is on solid when in this mode, but flashes sometimes when going uphill or accelerating a certain way. I don't have a finely-attuned pair of ears or butt to hear/feel any difference in power delivery when this happens, so I don't know if the 4WD is physically coming off and on, or if the switch for the light is faulty (as I've read to be a common issue). For the record, the PART TIME indicator has not come on when in 2WD as some users have reported. Any ideas on how I should test this? I do have access to a lift to drive it in the air if need be.

On a related note, my lamp or switch has been burned out this season. Which left me with some doubts as to whether my 4H was engaging. So I put it up on stands this weekend and made sure that both axles were engaged when 4H was selected (they were). So for me, it is a lamp or a switch.

Its a simple system. Either the switch or lamp is changing its state. The actual engagement of the transfer case is not likely changing on its own (they have been known to jump out of 4H, but I've never heard of them jumping -back into- 4H on their own).

Yep. That light is what it is, just a light that is triggered by the transfer case when the mechanical lever is switched into 4wd. Could be the sensor in the transfer case, the wiring between the light and the transfer case or the bulb/socket/wiring in the gauge cluster.

I removed the roof rack rail screws one at a time, squeezed some GE silicone rubber into the holes, coated the screws with same and reinstalled them. Make a study of your roof gutters. They rust and get holed. Also, raise your liftgate and inspect the area above where the roof panel is formed over the liftgate surround; especially the upper LH & RH corners. There's some factory sealant that gets deteriorated, loses its bond and begins lifting allowing water to enter. Clear GE silicone over those areas to prevent water entry.

Being in the Springs you are fortunate to have a good U pull it type salvage yard that typically has XJ’s and FN Jeep that has a variety used Jeep parts available. Both are in the south end of the city. Unfortunately I am not out there more often than I am. So, if you come across decent tan upholstery from a ’91 that is available let me know!
