Help with brakes
Hi all, I have an 88 Cherokee that has 10 inch drums on the back and 12 inch rotors on the front that I had replaced about 5k ago so they are in perfect condition. I also had all of the u-joints replaced at the same time. Now the motor is on the way out so I picked up a 90 Cherokee at first thinking to swap motors but the 90 is in such nice shape I've decided to keep it. The drums and rotors on the 90 are an inch smaller than they are on the 88 and I was wondering how difficult is it to swap over all the brake parts as well as the u- joints from one to the other. The object here is to be left with 2 running Jeeps.
I would also like to swap the auto tranny from the 90 for the 5 speed from the 88, again ending with 2 running jeeps and I have no idea how to begin or even if it's worth the effort.
I'm not the best mechanic in the world but I can get by, and I do have a good selection of tools. I just don't have a garage to work in and all my info comes , through my iphone, from good people like you guys.
I bought my first jeep last November and I love it but I know next to nothing about working on them so I would be grateful for any help I can get. Both jeeps have the 4.0l inline 6, both are 4x4 and one has an auto tranny while the other has a 5-speed manual.

WOW, I thought I would have to get married again to be ignored like this again. Kinda makes me miss the wife a bit. One post about 2 weeks ago, another yesterday, both asking the same question and both ignored

Unfortunately I'm staying at my moms place till work starts again and there is no Internet (on the farm). Everything I do online has to be done on my iPhone.
As for the rear ends, I have no way of telling which is which. If you could point me to some sort of writup with pics I could maybe identify them. As far as I know both jeeps are totally stock but that doesn't seem to mean much. The Haines manual has already proved wrong on a couple of things and is no help at all with what I'm hoping to do.

Thanks a ton, that will help for the time being. I'm not home now (had to take mom shopping) but I'll try and look under both jeeps when I get home. Thanks

Ok, I looked under both jeeps and took pics of the rear axles and I'm not too sure. Could you have a look and tell me which is which? I know for a fact that both front axles are the D30.

Judging by the fill plug one of them looks to be a 8.25.... I could be wrong... on the top leftside right beside the differential cover it will say 35 or 35c if its a 35 and another 35 will be stamped on right side were the axle tube goes into the differential housing... either way they should be a direct swap... just make sure which ever ones u decide to use have matching gears

Thanks, that's kinda what I thought too. Now back to the original question, can I, and if i can, how difficult is it to change the brakes from the 88 Cherokee to the 90. I had a parts guy say that I have to be careful with the ebrake cable because they can be attached differently and I might have to modify some parts. As far as I can tell everything looks the same, apart from the 1" difference in size from the 88 to the 90

the 88 will have bolt on caliper brackets, where as the 90 doesn't, and uses different calipers.
so you would have to at least swap calipers also.
the ebrake cables should be the same.
also, it's not easy to swap from auto to stick and vise versa, the auto is controlled by a computer via the tps and the gears are likely 3.07 stick and 3.55 auto. drive shafts are likely different also, so is the cross member.
