Well I guess I will take all this stuff apart before deciding what to do, if the 88 wasn't so rough and dinged up we would use it, the 84 has a VERY straight body.
I just chunked a 94 s10 blazer 4x4 with the 700 and 231, my dad used the trans and threw away the t-case and now I'm pissed I still have the trans to t-case adapter.
I am using a 700r4 with beefy internals on the 455 olds so I can use the trans adapter as a template to make another but I'll save the olds motor for my xj when I find one...I will try to get so good pics tonight, let u guys see.
Another question...the 84 has a 207 t-case, 88 is a 231, whats the difference and will they interchange??

I used a 2004r to make my chevy to bop adapter (it had the dual pattern on it). I'm debating what to do with my 350 olds once I build my 455 for my car, lol, cherokee was one idea.

I figured from what I have read on here that the 207 would be light duty but wasn't sure if there was a gear ratio, spline, bolt pattern difference. He can use it for now and rebuild the 231 or find a better one......I'm REALLY kicking myself for letting the blazer t-case go to the junkyard.......
Shaggimo, thats a damn good idea!!! I have a duel-p t-350 at the shop, not sure why I didn't think of that!!!!

Runs fantastic, will fry all four tires if you want to, basically the V-8 will fit in with a 1/4 to 1/2" of clearance on each side with the block hugger type of headers and Advance adaptors universal motor mount kit. I used the short water pump setup with pullys on the front of engine, power steering pully dia. will have to be reduced to clear steering box, I pulled off the stock one and found a smaller dia. one out of my junk pile and pressed it on. It's much easier to use the set up out of a s-10 blazer auto with 4WD, the 700r4 from a 4.3 liter bolts right up olong with the transmission adapter and the 231 transfer case from a 1988 blazer, I used a large Alum Griffin custom radiator and a advance adapter universal transfer case shifter to finish it off. I have been eye-balling a 6.0 liter gen.3 LS motor to put in it, haven't seen one of those engines in a Cherokee yet, sick, huh. Chevokeeman.

I got a couple pics last night...88 has the front ripped off, haven't taken apart the 84 but found water/oil mix in #3 cyl maybe a head gasket...cross your fingers!! :-)

I'm running a short waterpump set-up with street rod v-belt set up, shortest set up available for sbc. I had a friend that runs Blumenthals Driveline Shop build up the heavy-duty driveshafts so I don't think that will be a problem. The axles have been upgraded to Chromemoly also so if it tears up,I'll upgrade the axles to something beefier, since those pictures were taken I have changed to a Hi- Pinion Dana 44 front with chromemoly outer stubs and H/D 297 U-joints, like wive's they are never D-O-N-E. Good luck on your changover, Chevokeeman.

Hello I am a newbie here. I am a member of an Oldsmobile forum and have found it to be Very helpful. A friend of mine has an 88 Jeep Cherokee Laredo that he just wrecked and he asked me to help him fix it so I thought I would register and get some expert info Ok the build I am talking about is an 84 jeep wagoneer 2.5l i4 and an 88 Cherokee Laredo 4.0l i6, he wrecked the 88 but can probably be straightened out. What I was thinking is to take the 4.0l i6 and put it in the 84 but I read on this forum last night that a guy had a 2.8l v6 cherokee (is that an xj??) he wanted to do that to. There was a lot of discouragement, Is the 4cyl body just as hard to put a i6 in as the v6 body? I want to make 1 out of 2...any suggestions??? Thanks everyone!!!

sorry, I couldn't find this thread till after I created another but for all the guys that told me this could not be done with out major mods...I haven't had to modify anything yet and all I see is moving the x-member back for the longer motor thus drilling bolt holes ... MAYBE! It looks to me like they are pretty much generic. I have pics
I personally do not own one now but working on this one has sure turned me on to the cherokee or xj (is xj the right term??)

I found that out I have this 84 almost complete, and everything I have transfered from the 88 has bolted right up and even 90% of the 88 wires plugged in to the 84 wires like under the drivers side kick panel...The only thing we have left is to move the crossmember back a little and put the drive shafts and transfer case in...these things are like playing with lego's, pretty fun

back of the 6 cylinder, plenty of room
6 cyl sittin on the pads
