HELP. i'm about to lose it.
Hey all.
I have a 1989 Cherokee xj.
now I am at my whits end with this one.
its hard to start for one. its sputters and dies a couple times then when its warm it runs fine.
it will idle a little rough. but heres the kicker. when I turn my lights on it dies straight away while idling.
I checked all my grounds and conections went from bumper to bumper checking wiring. no shorts or bad grounds. alternator is new. relays are good.
oh and the fuel guage is wraped but it slowly goes to its proper spot until I turn the lights on then it wraps around again.
as for the rough idle and unresponsiveness. I checked the tps its good.
im going to assume how ever reads this will want more info just ask.

Did you physically refresh the grounds? How did you adjust the TPS?
Test the CPS?

I physically cleaned all the grounds and plugs. I just cleaned the tps. I'm doing the cls tomorrow.
This is new though.
When it's running rough. Pulling the lights will make the dash lights flicker until I drive it. Then it runs smooth like nothing wrong. But the dash lights don't work.
Ya I just got it.
the egr vacvac has been disconected and plugged.

alright cruiser54.
I went through and did every applicable thing on your list but to no avail.
how ever you should know that I did in fact find the culprit to all my problems.
now I should mention that you add this little tid bit to your already informative list . there is a ground wire in a cluster behind the driver side tail light that had eroded away I remounted it and evey thing was fine after that.
hard to believe that's all it was. all though going through your list sure did some good. tanks a bunch.
