I just threw a few new audio items in my XJ......little reminiscent of my original XJ system of the late 90's - early 00's. Here goes....
- Sony CDX-GT640UI deck (cheap and gets the job done)
- Infinity Kappa 52.9I coaxials (in front doors and rear over-head, no mods to install)
- Old school JL Powerwedge box w/ 3 10's (free from my cosuin, sounds OK...nothing to brag about - I would suggest either 1 JL 10W6v2 or 1 MTX 8500 or 9500 sub in 10" size - uses small enclosure, so not alot of space consumption)
- MTX Thunder 4320 & MTX Thunder 4160 (until I can find a MTX Thunder 2300) (both old school amps, but they pound and have never let me down - both hard to come by models)
I'm not too familiar with the newer amps on the market. Had a brief experince with a JL 300.4 and 500.1, but sold both since I needed money. I had a JL 10w6v2 sub for a while.....that thing sounded great. Wish I never sold it. The JL's I have now are old, so probably on their last legs. If I can find a set, I'd love to get some old-school MTX Thundercast subs. I had 12's and they sounded amazing. But, for now, I'd settle on the JL sub.....one will do plenty.

take it from a former world champion in stereos.if you want it loud,80 percent of it is box design.for example(in most cases)a cheaper sony subwoofer in a correct enclosure will be louder than say a memphis subwoofer in an incorrect enclosure.i've been doing this for 20 plus years and have ran alot of different subs.i won my championship using memphis mojos.now i run dc audio or atomic subs.diesel hit the nail on the head about kicker and jl is way overhyped and overpriced(i ran 13w7's before the memphis).head unit wise,i've run nothing but kenwood but alpine and eclipse are great as well.
pirate mafia named some solid sub choices.i'm starting to compete heavily again and i use my cherokee as a points chaser in the winter.i use a kenwood deck, one 5000 watt amp and 2 10 inch atomic apx subs in a small box that gets loud(147.3 db) that beats people running 2 12's or 2 15's.
also to get the most out of your alt, make sure you do the big 3 upgrade.
for 1,500 bucks(maybe cheaper),i could build you a killer system that gets loud without taking up alot of space and sounds clean.pm me if you're interested.

p.s. i don't run caps either.my ram is running 2 team level 5 dc audio subs 10 batteries, and 20,000 watts with no caps.check out caraudioclassifieds.org to find some deals on equipment or to get some ideas for the jeep as some others over there besides myself have jeep build logs.

as far as painting the plastic,i'd just sand it smooth with fine grit sandpaper, hit it with some adhesion promoter, paint it,then clear it unless you like the matte, dull finish look.

Low ball budget of 1250, could go as high as 2250. Would prefer loudness over sound quality but middle range preferred. I have a head unit that has been in two xjs that were totaled while they were parked, so probably going to get a new one of those.
Any website recommendations for audio and lighting?

Im not sure how relevant this post is going to be, (seeing that my car stereo removed and reinstalled 3 times in 3 different cars now) but after trying different setups (like a external EQ...btw...that was a total waste of 200 bucks) i found i like my clarion head unit paired up with infinity reference speakers. it sounds really sharp, and clean. in the back, ive got a 250w mono mtx pushing a mtx sub.
all of my stereo stuff must be at least 3 or 4 years old now, so like i said, i might not be relevant.
