Help with my new project!
Just got an XJ!
Just drove it home and I know quite a few things need to be done to this thing.
So I have a couple of questions.
I got home and noticed a small splash of pink/red fluid when I was checking the underneath
Now it seems to be coming from this gear looking thing, what is this? Its the first time I've seen a gear like this exposed?
Also, what revs do you normally get at say 100km/h?
Mine seem to sit at 2000, which I would think is a little high. But I don't know any better. Looks like an O2 sensor wires have been cut. Would that be causing it?

Ok buddy, that's your flywheel, and it should have a cover over it. Like so
My oil pan is off in this photo, but that big "gear" you see, is behind this silver plate. You should have one. That fluid is probably tranny fluid.

What year model? 4WD? Auto trans? Your location?
Give a few details so the haystack is smaller!
I have a 99 XJ 4WD Auto transmission with 3.55 gears fore and aft. At 2100rpms, I am usually at 70MPH, at 2000rpms I am at, or close to 65MPH.
Pink fluid is most likely transmission fluid although some antifreeze is pink. Put your finger in it and then smell it......you can tell the difference between tranny fluid and antifreeze.
If your O2 wires are cut, it should set a code (check engine light). You can repair the wiring or replace the sensor which comes with new wires. Just have to make sure they don't get caught up on anything sharp, spinning or hot.

BTW, after looking at the pics again.........that leak is almost certainly tranny fluid. Probably coming from the transmission pan gasket although you would have to check to confirm.

Ok cool, I know there's lots to do on this thing, parts of it is held together with zip ties lol.
It seems to have the NP242 transfer case, with the full time option on the shifter lever. (Which I need to adjust)
And it's an auto
And cool I'll add that gasket to the list.
I'll go see if I can get some codes off it brb

I dunno about gaskets, but you definitely need a fly wheel cover plate, and I would tighten those 5 bolts, and inspect your flywheel before covering it. Flywheels tend to heat and crack, use a flashlight to inspect it. The flywheel will have like 5 bolts, it's good to make sure they are tight, I do not have the torque specs but those are available thru Google, etc. But the main deal is your flywheel is WIDE OPEN exposed, got me?

I'll get on that Gramsey.
I won't be driving this until I've cleared these codes and fixed the leaks.
Would too much fluid throw a TCC out of range code?
I checked the dipstick and it seems to have too much fluid in it, although I did just drive it for 30 mins to get it home.
Thanks for the help so far guys!

Too much tranny fluid? The deal here is on the other side of that fly wheel is your torque converter, in front of that wheel is your rear main seal. Did you put it in neutral and check it, like warmed up? On my 95 I have two checks, cold neutral, warm neutral. Get a good reading on that tranny fluid, but if you have aw4 it can handle abuse.

Well it's been sat for maybe 2 hours by the time I checked it so I would assume cold and it was quite a lot higher than max, and it was in park. (Which is neutral right? I've just moved to Canada where they all drive auto's. I'm used to manuals lol)
I guess I can change the Torque Converter Solenoids and change the fluid at the same time. Hopefully that'll get rid of the code.

Ok cool, it's probably just the loud exhaust on this thing that's tricking my ears.
I also noticed when I went to turn it off last night, I removed my key from the ignition, but the ignition cylinder was still on the key? How do I stop the cylinder from coming out?
Thanks guys! I'm thinking I may start a log for this project at some point. Theres SO much to fix on this thing lol
Edit : I'm gonna need some help tracking down that plate. Everything I've looked up so far says discontinued. is there a part number or a plate that would be compatible from another vehicle? @Tgramsey
