Default Help with transmission overheating

Been having trouble with my 96 xj country transmission keeps getting way too hot. I bought it a year ago and have since replaced many parts including the head gasket and manifold. Engine run at a nice cool temp, last summer after I bought it the trans got so hot it started slipping on the freeway and burned some oil off. Managed to get it home and the fluid was burnt so I changed the filter and added some new fluid and it seemed to run fine as far as I knew all thru winter but now that we’re in the high temps again it burnt the fluid and started slipping again. So I added a temp sensor and transmission cooler and it had been running fine until just a couple hour into a recent 4hour trip I noticed trans temp going to 260 uphill and downhill getting down to 225 maybe. Could it be the torque converter? Or either tcm or tps? Besides the heat building up it shifts on time and rpms are usually around 2000. I have noticed sometimes at about 55mph the rpms would drop to 1500 but I could still accelerate/ maintain speed then it would start vibrating pretty bad and I’d have to let off. I’m hoping there might still be a fix and that it’s not just on its last leg.

also I have 32s with 4.56 gears and 4.5 inches of lift

It's not likely the TCM. Is the torque converter locking up? Drive along steady at highway speed and lightly tap the brake with your left foot. You should see the rpm jump a few hundred rpm when the t/c unlocks. I would also test the TPS, and make sure the throttlebody-transmission cable is properly adjusted. Correct Dexron (not ATF+4) fluid and full?

Yea it has fluid I’m using Castrol dexron Mercon. The rpms don’t change when I tap the brakes. How do I test the tps?

what is the ambient air temp ?

your TC should lock in 3 or 4th, so drive steadily on a long stretch of road and you should to feel 4 changes in 3rd, or 5 in "drive"

The RPM will drop about 10% at ~ 40mph and 55mph respectivly, if not, your TC is not operating, and its probably the solenoid

test from the correct pin on the trans connector to - battery, each solenoid should be around 13 ohms

if the TC solenoid isnt, you have a bad wire or solenoid (like mine atm)

having said that, your trans should not overheat unless pulling uphill, and its over about 75F ambient, even with no TC lockup..if ts slipping, thats another story

If my trans gets over 230F, I would pull up, and put it in neutral for a bit

Could even be caused by a faulty switch on the brake pedal.
