It is not that kind of timing. It just says that the crankshaft is in the right relationship with the camshaft and that the engine has reached a minimum of 300 RPM when that info is recieved by the computer then the injectors and ignition spark is turned on. If that signal is lost then they are in turn shut off. So you see the signal from the CPS is essential to have the engine continue to run.

Yes they do go bad but they are usually either bad or good not intermitten.
Look at that diagram I gave you and check the CPS's connections. They are getting and giving milivolt signals and are thus prone to being a bad or poor connection problem from your symptoms.

Update. I met my dad at my jeep and switched the fuel pump relay with another relay. It died multiple times while we drove it. So it's not the fuel pump relay. Got it back to the parking lot and decided to make it to autozone to have the codes pulled. Got it out of the driveway and it died and wouldn't start again. My dad pulled me to a mechanics shop that was close and I told the mechanic what was going on with it. The first thing out of his mouth was camshaft sensor. So I left the Jeep with him and he's gonna fix it for me. I'll know here in a little bit if that was it. Thanks a lot for ya'lls help.

you have 99. Go drive it to autozone or advanced and get them plug up the jeep and check codes. If it throws a code 11 thats the CPS. Buy one while your there and install it in the parking lot in 10 minutes.

Thanks Desert. The mechanic we pulled the Jeep to checked the codes and it showed it was the CPS. He has them in stock and is gonna put it in for me. Doing it for 130 bucks parts and labor. The sensor was about 90 bucks from autozone, so he's giving me a pretty good deal. I was gonna drive it to autozone, but it wouldn't start and it way to far to pull.

Glad to help out man. I ended up replacing the fuel pump and filter totaling 150 bucks before I checked the code and realized it was that all along.

Just an update on the XJ. I had the CPS put on yesterday and that fixed the problem. All of the codes that were thrown pointed to the CPS going out. Thanks a lot for the help guys.
