Default Hot air issue, any ideas?

Hello everybody, hope all is well in Jeep land today.

I have a question concerning all the hot air blowing through the vents....in the middle of summer.

The air-conditioner only blows very hot air. And, even when my wife turns on the fresh air to cool only very hot air comes in. It's as if there might be a door or flap in the distribution box that's stuck. Is that a possibility? I have a hard time believing the freon has leaked out because, it's a 1998 and not that old, and also hot air keeps blowing no matter what is turned on in the control panel.

Any thoughts.....I assume it has a door that needs to be able to move and it's probably controlled by vaccuum....right?????

i believe the heater valve is vaccuum controlled as well and may not be closing. are you sure the compressor is coming on?

Your describing the blend door.. something that usually is not an issue on the Cherokee's.. the Grands are another story.

The fact that it's coming out the vents also tells me that your vac cannister behind bumper is working correctly and does not have a cracked line.. which would divert all air to defrost.

Does the compressor cycle when you put the AC on? If not thats a strong indicator of low freon. 98 was 13 years ago..

Thanks for the replies. I just went out and turned it on and the comp does turn on, as indicated by sound and rpm drop.

Why, on a 60 deg day, would freakeshly hot air come through the fresh air when my wife turns it to the fresh air selection?

sounds like your heater valve is not closing.
