There is a drain plug near the bottom that takes a 10mm allen to open.Open it and let drain then put plug back on and refill through the fill plug above it.

ALWAYS make sure to crack the fill plug loose before opening the drain plug.

Don't want to end up with the T-case empty and you can't get the fill plug open.

It should a 10mm allen but I have a 96 too and both fill and drain on mine were 1-1/4" giant oil drain plug things.

No. The XJ transfer cases use automatic transmission fluid. The T-case isn't picky, it can be either Dex/Merc or ATF+. But I normally recommend Dex/Merc III just so you don't have ATF+ laying around and get the idea that it would work in the tranny.

It should be 30mm, some older or modified rigs do have a 10mm allen. my 93, 95, 97, 96 are or were all 30mm.

I have a 96 also, and I had to buy a 1-3/16 socket to remove the fill/drain plugs. I used ATF-4 on my Cherokee since that is the recommended oil in my 05 Wrangler LJ with the same NP-231 gear case.

also make sure you open the fill plug BEFORE you drain it, it will just make a big huge mess if you dont cause it all just shoots out, i found that out the hard way, and it was hot too, i wasnt too happy about that haha

Use Dex 111, dont ude ATF +4, I searched for it online and in the auto parts store, its recomended to only use Dextron 2 or 3 for the transfer case in this year cherokee or grand cherokee
