How to check engine codes without a scanner

How to check engine codes without a scanner
Does anybody know a trick to check the codes? I'm aware of a trick on the grand cherokees, but it didnt work when I tried it.

98 not anymore, you need code scanner for around $60
On some cars you could even get air bag codes, using jumper (I think 97 Accord)
95 Crown Vic was blinking air bag codes w/o any actions.
Chrysler was the best, no jumper wire (GM), no analog multimeter(Ford), just turn key on 3 times, that is it!
