How do you know if you have ABS?
Might be a stupid question but i re searched and cant find out how you can tell if your XJ has ABS.
Or do they all have ABS?
If someone has a site where they can re direct me that contains this info i would greatly apreciate it.
Thanks guys

Look at your brakes,if they have wires to them you have abs,and there will be a tone ring or a gear on the inside of the tire where those wires are going to. They will be on all wheels. Yours being an 88 you will also in the engine compartment by the radiator bottle is a hi pressure pump for the abs,the lines lead to the master cylinder, you should also here a pump like sound when using your brakes, and las t under the rear seat is the controller for the abs,it is a black box. And with that said abs did not get introduced until 89,it would be very slim you have it unless yours was made late 88,and is stamped 88,but is actually an 89

i agree with builtnotbought89'. just find some loose dirt in a safe area. hit the breaks like you want to skid and you will know if you have abs. the pedal feels like its pumping back and forth.

Ya the brake pedal pulsing will be very noticable it scared the crap outta me the first time I felt ABS!
ABS was made so that instead of locking up ur tires & sliding on slick surfaces! It pulses the brakes pad, so that ur tire dosent loose traction in emergency braking!!!
The ujoint u ordered I take it were for ur hub & the reason they asked is cause they might make a diff. Ujoint for xj's with abs. Probably so it dosnt interfear with the wheel speed sensor!

it depends on what you are trying to do,if you are trying to swap the entire diff from drum to drum, you will need to swap all the abs stuff if you want to keep it,but like I said earlier, you more than likley do not have abs because you have an 88,and abs was not introduced until 89.
as far as which one is better,I think anything that keeps you from skidding is better than not having control.

ok did some digging around and abs is not intended to make you brake faster, it actually take longer to brake completely than a non abs truck. its meant to pump the brakes to maintain control so you get to swerve out of watever your about to crash into.
crazy.
And yes it did start in 1989 but it might be the cut off year as was the 29 spline 8.25 was in 1996.
So ima go drifting in bout five minutes, lol

to find out if you have abs.....look at dash........turn key to on........see a yellow light that say's "ABS" come on then go out? if so you have abs.
after you start up and drive off and get say over 10 mph.....if the abs light doesn't come on........the abs is working as it should.
not as much fun i guess but..........
