How do you know if your oil pump is failing?
Does it just randomly give out? Or are there signs? Reason being I stumbled upon this at allpar:
"The 4.0L was a strong performing engine. There were a couple of issues with the basic design, including leaks; the oil pump was notorious for wearing out at around 145,000 to 155,000 miles, and the TPS (throttle position sensor) on the 1989/1990 models would fail if someone spit on the sidewalk. Make sure you have about 30 lbs oil pressure at idle (+/- 5 lbs)."
Well my jeep is at this mileage and my dummy light for oil pressure always comes on after its warmed up, but only on idle it lights up. I know the best known fix for this is a new pressure sender, but what if that's not the problem at all? So what if youre just driving down the road and ur oil pump goes out. Does your engine seize up from no lubrication?

Have the oil pressure checked with a known accurate mechanical gauge. Actual low oil pressure is a sign of worn bearings. Owner neglect/**** poor maintenance is probably number one cause actual low oil pressure. Notorious oil pump failure at 145K-155K......that's a good one.
Most any engine "gives out" from owner neglect.
