How do you know when it's time to change the O2 sensors?

How do you know when it's time to change the O2 sensors?
Do you just wait until the engine throws a code or should they be changed on a regular basis?

It should be routine maintenance. If you see your mileage decreasing that's also a sign they need to be replaced since they control air/fuel mixture
