I ran 4.5" on 33's with a T-Case drop and had no issues. As soon as I stepped up to 35's though I got some nasty vibes on the freeway. With 3"s though youll be fine

when going from 20 to 30 mph feels like a plane taking off...thats usually a good indicator. every jeep is different, but most say you should have one over 3.5 inches. I just put on the 3.5 inch RE lift...and the vibes are BAD

The real answer is, you won't know till you lift it and see what it does. No two Jeeps react the same to a lift. I've seen some vibe at 3" (mine), some at 2" (my friends with a BB), and other go 5-6" and be just as smooth as can be.
Best method is to go ahead and budget for one, but lift it and drive it. If you have vibes, start with a 1" transfer case drop and see if that helps. At 3", in most cases you can get by with that set up. In general, anything 3.5" and more a SYE is a must. I ran 3" w/ a 1" tcase drop and still minor vibes for a year before I started running into issues. When I went to 3.5" I went with an SYE and haven't looked back.

Nope, you redrill the trackbar mount over...i think its like 3/4 of an inch. Tells you want to do in the directions. Not the best solution, but will work for me for the time being. I plan on going bigger in a few months, so im waiting til i get all the pieces. I have my Porc Sye coming in the mail.

good thread bc i was wondering the same thing myself. i plan on the 4.5" from rough country and that kit has a 1" tc drop. and i do plan on the qd sways and the adjustable trackbar. i only plan on 31's at the moment but in the futire i will go larger like 32, 33". is it a good idea to just spend the money now or wait to see how she reacts?

At 4.5", i'm about 90% sure you'll need a SYE....but like I said earlier, no two Jeeps react the same so you may luck out.

Many people recommend doing the SYE first. It's not a bad idea.
Ultimately I'll have a 6.5" lift and 33's maybe 35's. When I re-geared I think I went far enough to cover the 35's (4:56).

RC 4.5" on my 98 for 13 months. 1" TC drop. Smooth as silk. I WILL be doing the SYE on my NP242 though. As happens with most people I'm ready to go higher, plus I don't like the TC hanging down. I mean it's lifted for more clearance right?

$169 with a lifetime warranty. Also you can save even more money and use a front shaft from a junkyard. Then youll have interchangeable driveshafts

I should have done the SYE when I replaced the drive chain, but oh well. I'll go with Tom Woods when I do it. Sounds like his is the best choice for the NP242 at least. I agree the stock set up is just goofy. Save $50 in the manu process I guess.
