The balljoint press tool is pretty cheap on Amazon and is also useful for easily pressing out u-joints and if you own a Jeep is well worth the investment to keep on the shelf.

The video appears to be missing the actual removal of the ball joints. She bashes the knuckle off with the hammer and then it jumps right to installing the new upper (with a press) and seems to have already got the new lower one in.

I do have to respect the girl who made that video - she clearly doesn't have any reservation about getting her hands dirty and bashing away with a BFH. So I completely agree she seems to be a handy person to have around.

No. She knocks the steering knuckle off with a 5lb min sledge. She does not show the removal of the ball joint, which was not done with a hammer. She then uses a press to install the new ones (which even if you could get them out with a hammer, which you can't, you would still have to contend with putting new ones in).

as I will probably have to do this job on my Jeep, it appears the only real way to get those jammed in ball joints out (and back in), is with the correct ball joint press toolkit ?

out here in Australia, there is no such thing as tool rental programs...I just cant imagine how they are allowed to exist from a legal liability standpoint,
unless citizens of the USA are much less retarded than Aussies, a lot of these tools can end up hurting you, or getting damaged, or both

Yes, a c-clamp press kit with a good assortment of cups is about the only way to do it. Getting mine out took almost everything the press had to give.

Yes - you want the press and proper cups. Jordan's suggestion is a good bet.

It's unfortunate that places outside the U.S. don't have loaner tool programs. Even our neighbors to the north have reported a lack of loaner tool options.

I doubt it's a lack of foolish people - many might argue we have more than most..
If anything I think it's the fierce competition between parts retailers - they want to sell you the ball joints - so they lend you a press.
Yes, the tools can and often are beat on, but most of the tools they loan are pretty heavy duty.
As far as legal liability, they make it pretty clear in the fine print at all the parts retailers that they assume no liability and they have corporate lawyers to protect them. I've never heard of a parts retailer being sued, and it seems the "spilling hot coffee on your lap" sort of crazy lawsuits have gone by the wayside.

I think if one of your local parts retailers starts doing loaner tools, you'll quickly see the rest of them follow suit.

The way they get around the legal liability is they technically sell you the tool and you return the tool under their return policy. If anything happens the tool is replaced under its lifetime warranty. So really the company who makes the tools seems to get the bad end of the deal here.
