Good Lord! This thing broke with slight pressure. It keeps breaking and I cannot get it free from the valve cover. Trying to keep the pieces from falling down in. Have new grommets and that is what I planned on replacing.

I was in the same boat. Both grommets were rock hard, and one of the breathers was cracked. I tried replacing all without removing the valve cover, but it didnt work for me. So i pulled the valve cover, which needed to be done anyway as the valve cover gasket was leaking. But if your gasket is not leaking, cut the old grommets and remove them pieces. The smaller the surrounding rubber gets, the weaker its grip on the breather it should be, and eventually the breather should come right out. if you have to, removing the valve cover isnt that bad. Dont lose the metal inserts and dont over tighten the bolts, which are only 80 or so INCH pounds. I stopped at 60 tho as they felt pretty dang tight by then. I used a Felpro VS50458R valve cover gasket. It comes with new rubber grommets, but not the inserts.

I used aluminum foil to cover the open holes in the head and then covered that up with rags to keep any old gasket and junk out of the engine. I used a straight razor blade. A shop vac came in handy as well.

That was what I did with a utility knife. Cut it into smaller pieces and was able to remove the grommet little by little.
By the time you get about a 1/3 to 1/2 off you should be able to pull the rest out in one piece.

That worked. Cut almost all of the flange rubber off with small diagonals. Thing flipped sideways on me and was able to hold on for dear life as I cut the rubber all the way down to the breather plastic and got it out. Took a blue paper towel and dabbed the plastic bits from the purch below. Blocked the hole with the yellow and brass cludge in pic for the drive to O’Reilly.

That fitting is $6 at Oreilly, 17” of 9/16” hose was under $2, and already had a clamp for the valve cover end.

Did you make sure you got the right one?
The front and back might look similar but are not.
One is wide open and one has a pin hole.
Thing is I can never remember which is which.

I was just about to post about that.

The one that came from the factory is wide open. The O'Reilly part has a check valve or something. Should I drill that out?

The back one I am leaving alone until it evaporates on its own.

I think you should get the right one.
But I guess you can open it up.
Poking around looks like the wide open one is up front.
Pin hole one being in the rear.
Also I think the height of each one is different too.

I can never remember what year your XJ is.
You should put it in your profile.

The front one pulls clean air from the air filter and the rear one is a calibrated vacuum leak to return blowby gasses to the intake manifold.

I was running it with the front one open and no air cleaner or air box for about 8 years, then plugged the line off the front for a few years. Gonna have to run it like this for a little while.

This looks more like the correct part.

Repair it by wrapping some bacon around it. Bacon makes everything better.

I have the remnant of the grommet, the inner ring that was hard as PVC, soaking in WD-40 to see if it softens up.
